ASG Presentation with Zuelia Ann Hurt, former Simplicity pattern designer

When: Oct 15, 2022
From 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm
Where: Pine Grove United Methodist Church
1130 Jonestown Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27103

Have you ever wondered what it takes to get a job in a large fashion company in the Big Apple? Well, wonder no more! This, and other of your earth-shattering fashion questions, will be answered in our Annual ASG meeting on Saturday, October 15, 2022.

Our guest program presenter will be Zuelia Ann Hurt, former designer for Simplicity Pattern Co. Inc. She will reveal what life was like working there in the 1960’s-1970’s during what was the peak, definitive time in the home-sewing industry. She will give a virtual tour of how sewing patterns were produced plus show fashions from her personal wardrobe of this area, discussing what apparel construction was like then compared to now.

Ann worked her way up from the Educational Department to the Design Department into her ultimate goal as a designer. She was appointed by Simplicity’s President to originate and be creative designer for their design division expansion into CRAFTS and HOME DECORATING PATTERNS.  Her needle-art, home, and apparel designs made history in sales and presentation resulting in Simplicity producing a specialized Counter Catalog for these designs. Her most famous and ground-breaking pattern was for the Holly Hobby ® soft-sculptured doll, licensed to them by American Greetings™. Additionally, Ann has been a major contributor in the needle-arts world, participating in at least 20 published books and magazines.

Virginia born, and now re-established there, Ann claims “dual citizenship” with New York City since she lived there more than half of her life. With formal training from Virginia Tech, Parsons School of Design, Fashion Institute of Technology and Queens College, Ann is truly a shining star in the world of sewing and creativity.

We are thrilled and honored to be hosting this accomplished, artistic and entertaining designer as she regales us with stories and a fun trip down memory lane. Lunch included in this fun celebration of the 70's, $15/ASG members, $20/non-members.
